Candy Cakes

The second stop on our cupcake tour was Candy Cupcakes in Baker Street Station. The shop sells not only cupcakes but also a wide range of sweets with a distinctive American theme.

Candy Cakes

This time we decided to only go for mini cupcakes as we had already eaten a lot of food earlier in the day. We chose Lemon, Cookies & Cream and Red Velvet.

Lemon, Cookies and Cream, Red Velvet

I found the buttercream tasted just like a thick blob of butter rather than the light and delicate mix of butter and icing found in most buttercreams.  I personally wasn’t keen and was very glad to have only gone for a mini size as the butter taste totally overpowered the whole cake part of the cupcake, so much so that I can’t actually comment on if the cake was moist/dry or the actual flavour of the cake.  My husband and son who could both eat butter straight from the tub (my son does regularly when I am baking) loved the icing and would have happily eaten a fully sized cake and buttercream (they are a rather odd pair mind you!)

So I guess this just goes to show that it’s each to their own when it comes to the “butteryness” of a buttercream frosting and it is something that my husband and I are still debating.

Primrose Bakery

Primrose Bakery is a cute cupcake shop in Covent Garden with a very summery yellow store front, it has a few tables inside and a lovely bench outside where you could sit and watch the world go by while indulging in a cupcake or two…

Primrose Bakery Covent Garden

In our week off we ended up visiting Primrose Bakery twice

The first visit was in the middle of a massive sightseeing tour around London when we happened just to walk past Primrose Bakery (o which i actually screamed out loud in excitement, scaring the life out of my husband) just after we had eaten so we decided to buy some cupcakes to save and eat on the train home later on, which wasn’t a good idea and they got a bit bashed about 😦

Lemon and Orange Blossom

All the cupcakes looked amazing but we finally went for Orange Blossom and Lemon, they were yummy but were not the best after travelling around London for 4 hours including on and off the tube and a train ride home however you could tell that had they been fresh could have been amazing.

The second time we went back was after a morning walking around Leicester Square and Covent Garden.

Coconut, Vanilla, White Chocolate and Strawberry

This time we chose White Chocolate & Strawberry, Vanilla and Coconut.

I found Coconut still on the slightly dry side but it was the first time I’ve had a Coconut cupcake  so not sure if that’s just the texture. Both the Vanilla and White Chocolate & Strawberry were both perfectly soft and tasty. with a perfect icing (which my son who is obsessed with icing ate very quickly!).  My husband actually said that his White Chocolate and Strawberry was his favourite cupcake of the whole trip!

I would definitely recommend Primrose Bakery (and have to most people I’ve told about my cupcake adventures) and I can’t wait to go back and try some more of their flavours, especially as it is right near Shrek the Musical on Drury Lane which I am also dying to go and see (sounds like a perfect evening Shrek and Cupcakes!)

London Cupcake Tourist

I follow an American Cupcake Abroad‘s blog and one thing that she has on her blog is a map of London with cupcake and other food stores that she has visited or wants to visit. I think that is is a brilliant idea as blogs I follow and people I work with are always recommending places I should try in London and this helps me to remember them all

This is my map so far

I moved to Essex 2 years ago but have only been into London 3 times for concerts which is crazy as it is only 50 minutes on the train and my husband commutes to London 5 days a week. We have just had our 2 weeks summer holiday but weren’t able to go abroad so decided to visit London as a tourist as I have never done it and neither has our 3 year old, plus it was a perfect excuse to visit some cupcake shops in between the normal tourist attractions.

The next few posts will show you our food tour of London

Enjoy!!
